Chengdu & Xi'an Private Tour — Giant Pandas & Terracotta Warriors

April 28, 2026 · 8 min read · FFGR China VIP Team

China's two most compelling cultural destinations outside Beijing and Shanghai — Chengdu and Xi'an — share a common quality: they reward the visitor who controls their own schedule. The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is extraordinary at 07:30 when the pandas are fed and the crowds have not yet arrived. The Terracotta Warriors Museum in Xi'an is transformative after 17:30 when the tour groups have left and the light through the pit windows turns amber. These are not the hours that a group tour operates. These are the hours that FFGR China delivers.

CTU Airport — Chengdu Arrival

Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU), opened in 2021, has become the primary international gateway to western China, handling long-haul traffic from Europe, the Middle East, and North America. The older Chengdu Shuangliu Airport (CTU) remains active for domestic and some regional routes. Both airports are approximately 50 km from the city centre and the Panda Base.

Our Chengdu team operates from both terminals. For private aviation, TFU's general aviation facility is on the east apron; CTU's executive terminal is in the north complex. Ground transfer time to the Panda Base is approximately 55 minutes from TFU and 30 minutes from CTU under normal conditions. We recommend a 07:00 arrival window at the Panda Base — our chauffeur will have you there before 08:00.

Panda Base — Private Visit Protocol

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (成都大熊猫繁育研究基地) is the world's most significant giant panda conservation facility and a genuinely extraordinary natural encounter. The base opens at 07:30; panda feeding begins at approximately 08:00 and is the optimal viewing window. By 10:30, tour group volumes make the enclosure areas difficult to navigate comfortably.

FFGR China arranges private-guide access to the base through our Chengdu cultural concierge network. This includes a licensed bilingual guide specialising in conservation biology, priority entry positioning, and coordination with base management for the extended photography session that is available to private visitors at the sub-adult enclosure. The panda encounter at dawn, with frost still on the bamboo, is a memory that no group tour can replicate.

Xi'an — Terracotta Warriors After Hours

The Museum of Qin Terracotta Warriors and Horses (秦始皇帝陵博物院) — the burial guard of China's first emperor — is located 37 km east of Xi'an city centre, near the Lishan foothills. Standard visiting hours close at 18:00; the official after-hours programme for private groups allows access from 17:30 to 19:00, when the three excavation pits are illuminated and the visitor volume drops by 95%.

We coordinate the after-hours access request through our Xi'an heritage concierge partner, typically requiring 14 days minimum notice and confirmation of group size. Our vehicle positions at the private vehicle entrance on the site's north perimeter — not the general coach park on the south — and the guide begins the visit with Pit 2 (the most archaeologically active) before the standard sequence. This reversal allows the primary viewing at Pit 1 to be experienced in near-complete silence.

High-Speed Rail Between Cities

Chengdu and Xi'an are connected by the Chengdu-Xi'an High Speed Railway: the fastest G-class services complete the 658 km journey in 3 hours 27 minutes, departing from Chengdu East Station and arriving at Xi'an North Station. For a two-city itinerary, this is the optimal intercity connection — faster than the flight (when airport-to-airport time is included) and significantly more comfortable.

FFGR China provides chauffeur service at both ends: Chengdu hotel to Chengdu East, Xi'an North to the city hotel or directly to the Terracotta Warriors. We arrange the rail tickets through our concierge desk and coordinate the station transfer timing so that you arrive at the platform 10 minutes before departure — no earlier, no later.

Hotel Logistics — The Right Property

In Chengdu, the optimal base for a panda-focused itinerary is the Waldorf Astoria Chengdu or the Four Seasons Chengdu, both in the Tianfu district — 25 minutes from the Panda Base, 15 minutes from the Jinsha Site Museum (an alternative early-morning cultural visit). The Chengdu IFS Tower area (Taikoo Li) provides an alternative for clients who want to combine the cultural programme with Chengdu's renowned dining scene.

In Xi'an, the Sofitel Legend Peoples Grand Hotel occupies a heritage building near the Bell Tower and the Muslim Quarter — the most efficient positioning for both the city wall evening walk (the most atmospheric way to see Xi'an at dusk) and the 37 km road transfer to the Terracotta Warriors site. We pre-brief the hotel concierge on your schedule to ensure seamless coordination on both mornings.

Booking Your Chengdu & Xi'an Private Tour

The Chengdu-Xi'an private tour programme is available year-round. Peak months (May, October, Spring Festival) require booking at least 21 days in advance due to demand for private guide and after-hours access coordination. For the panda photography experience and the Warriors after-hours visit, we require 14 days minimum notice.

Contact our desk via WhatsApp or email. For multi-city itineraries combining Chengdu, Xi'an, Beijing, or Shanghai, we provide a full programme design service — chauffeur, guide, hotel, and dining — under a single concierge account.
